When SEO measures are implemented, terms such as “backend” are often mentioned. This lexicon article explains what it is and what it defines.

What is a backend?

The backend is the “internal area” of a system, just like a website. The system can be managed via the backend, but developments and design adjustments can also be made via the backend, while the counterpart to the backend is the “frontend”, which is the user interface. The technical administration in the backend ensures use in the frontend. This is therefore one of the areas that are of considerable importance.

The admin interface for content management systems

In content management systems (CMS), the backend is the admin interface, which is used to write articles that are then visible in the frontend. This can also result in a complex structure due to any adjustments and scope. This is primarily the case when additional functions are integrated. A system such as WordPress can result in a company website, but can also be used to create a video platform.

How does a backend work?

There are different ways of working that a backend takes over. There are currently three main factors: Application, server and database. Every change in the backend is entered in the database and transferred from there to the frontend. However, there are currently developments that mean the database is no longer necessary – these systems are referred to as “headless CMS”.

What tasks does a backend perform?

The tasks that a backend fulfills are extensive.

The following functions are essential:

  • Customization of the design
  • Management and control of users
  • Content maintenance (texts, images, videos)
  • Installation of additional functions
  • Customizations for SEO
  • Management/processing of orders/enquiries

How is a backend used in everyday life?

A backend can be found wherever personalized content can be displayed. This is therefore the case on every website that has a login (front end). Everything that follows is the backend. This is not only the case for ordinary websites, but also for online stores and online banking; in the case of a blog, this would be the admin interface, but also a reader profile, which can be used to manage comments or provide exclusive content. Although the term “backend” sounds so complicated, most backends are designed for laypeople.

What can be done for SEO in the backend?

In the backend, any changes can be made in the SEO context, which describes factors relating to on-page optimization. The meta title and meta description are important here, as these are also reflected in the search results.

The following adjustments are also possible:

  • .htaccess changes
  • NoIndex, NoFollow, NoArchive
  • Indexing
  • Canonical Tag

In addition, an SEO plugin such as Rank Math can be used to check how customized a post or subpage is.
